An Introduction


Renowned artist, Amolak Singh (56) who worked for 14 years as Curator of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) and renovated the Central Sikh Museum in the Harmandar Sahib complex after Operation Blue Star, needs no introduction. He was born in Amritsar near Harmandir Sahib on 2nd October 1950. He studied in Sri Guru Ramdas High School in Amritsar and later on in 1968 his family shifted to Delhi.

He became interested in painting while pursuing his higher studies and brought home laurels home whenever he participated in any competition.

During his collegiate days in 1969 he further cultivated this hobby into matured profession. While continuing his studies at Central City College, Patel Nagar in Delhi he went under training in the patronage of the likes of Prithvi Soni and Mahesh Kumar Sehgal eminent artists who trained him in the art of banner making. He went to Mumbai with Mahesh Kumar to the Film City and continued working on his passion. Calendar artist Sri S.M. Pandit, Patel Sardar, Ved Prakash, Ram Kumar became his patrons. Tilak Saheb an eminent portrait artist in cine line also helped him a lot. Amolak Singh Artist painted and sketched the portraits in the hindi film "Safar" in which the main character of an artist was played by Rajesh Khanna. Whole work was done under the guardianship of Tilak Saheb.

He had worked as an artist from 1970 to 1974 in the Bollywood. He got the opportunity to paint in various films like "Dil ka Raja", "Raja Ram", "Samay Ko Badal Dalo", "Dulhan Ek Raat Ki". He continued his stay in Mumbai till 1974 and tied nuptial knot when he returned to Delhi the same year.

Amolak Singh became the ardent student of S. Sobha Singh Artist who was living in Adhretta (Himachal) at that time. After a year or so in 1976 Amolak Singh settled down in Delhi at Patel Nagar where he started his own studio and chanellised his art towards Sikh historical paintings. He had created more than 400 paintings. His introduction with Punjab & Sind Bank lead him to new heights from where he never saw back and became a dedicated artist of Sikh Community. One can see his work at the Punjab & Sind Bank, PNB Finance, Bank of Punjab, Central Sikh Museum Amritsar, Baba Baghel Singh Museum Delhi, Bhai Mati Das Museum, Chandani Chowk, Delhi.

In 1980 Principal Satbir Singh renowned Sikh author brought him to Amritsar, where Amolak Singh was appointed Curator Artist in the Central Sikh Museum of Harmandar Sahib. He was the third person to be appointed to this post previously occupied by likes of Kirpal Singh artist and Master Gurdit Singh artist. He worked there for 14 years and improved the Museum. This museum has around 100 of his paintings displayed. He also improved Baba Baghel Singh Museum within three years with new paintings. The year 2001 saw him working for Bhai Mati Das museum at Chandani Chowk in Delhi, where he also made effort in the building plan of the museum. His effort paid well and the result was the most wonderful museum in the Sikh history.

He had been honoured by different organisations and individuals for his work. His works used to be published in daily newspapers on a regular basis.
